On Friday June 27, more than 50 enthusiastic colleagues got on their bikes for a good cause. With their kilometers, they raised as much money as possible for Stichting Matchis and de Hartstichting. It was a sporty day in which vitality, solidarity and social involvement all came together.

After four organized editions of the Elfstedentocht cycling tour in Friesland, it was time for something new this year—more varied distances, organized cycling clinics—and closer to home. From Amgen’s office in Breda, participants set off in different groups for routes ranging from 50 up to 220 kilometers, through the beautiful landscapes Brabant has to offer. Along the way, there was plenty of time to encourage each other, catch up, and enjoy the sunny weather and charming villages and scenery. The Amgen Tour of Brabant was born!

Cycling for a future with more donors and a healthy heart

This year, the participants cycled for two wonderful causes: de Hartstichting and Stichting Matchis, the Dutch center for stem cell donors. With every kilometer, the participants contributed to more awareness and support for these organizations, which are committed to life-saving initiatives every day.

A sporty day with a warm heart

After the effort, the cycling colleagues gathered in the heart of Breda for a cozy closing event filled with stories, smiling faces, and of course, a well-deserved drink. The highlight came a few days later when both charities personally received the raised funds at the Amgen office. A special moment where everyone looked back proudly on a successful first edition of the Amgen Tour of Brabant.

In this video, Amgen colleagues cycle between 50 and 220 kilometers during the very first edition of The Amgen Tour of Brabant. You see them riding together to raise money for the Heart Foundation and Matchis. The video gives an impression of the route, atmosphere, and dedication of the day.

We’re cycling the Tour of Brabant and we’re doing it to support two charitable causes. That’s Matchis and the Heart Foundation. And we’re doing it with more than 50 Amgen colleagues. They’re cycling different distances. Some are cycling 50 kilometers or 100 kilometers. A few are cycling 170 kilometers. And then we also have a few die hards cycling the full 220 kilometers. For the good cause.

Welcome! The last four times we started from Bolsward, we did the 11-cities bike ride. Now Rob has, and it’s unfortunate that Rob can’t be here now, mapped out two beautiful routes. Or even more actually. So, I think we’re ready to head out.

What do you think of the route so far? Yeah, nice route. It’s beautiful here in the Biesbosch. Yeah, I’m really enjoying it! Are you looking forward to the second half or are you most dreading it? It’s even more than what we’ve already had. I just realized that, so we’ll have to keep pushing. But it’ll be fine.

How’s it going today? Really well actually. Yeah, better than expected. Yeah, it’s tough. Yeah, I’m from production. For 25 years I’ve been working at Amgen. That’s great!

Rianne, how’s it going today? It’s going really well. I actually thought it would be really tough, but it’s such a beautiful route and we’re chatting so pleasantly that it’s going super well. We also have such a big group, so that’s really fun.

We can ride for two good causes, which one are you riding for? I chose the Heart Foundation. And why? I’ve experienced it up close, especially in my father’s family. People have even passed away, so that’s why the Heart Foundation is close to my heart. Yeah, I chose Matchis. That really aligns with what we do at Amgen – well-known.

I also chose Matchis. It’s something that runs in families. It’s good, because there’s also this connection in the Netherlands. I felt attached to it.

We were going strong, but sometimes it was just a bit too fast. But then again, apparently people enjoy that too. But there were a few kilometers where I thought: shall I quit, or shall I keep going? But oh well. You’re tough one. I’m still here.

I originally wanted to do 50 in the afternoon, 170 kilometers total. But it was going so well, and it was so much fun! So I just joined the 100 kilometer ride in the afternoon too.

Satisfied? Yes, absolutely! All good! I had a great ride! Did you have a good ride? Yes! How did you find the 220 kilometers distance? Yeah, nice! The last 20 kilometers are always tough. Nice, man! Did you get a flat tire? Yes! Whose? Frank, right at the end. Oh, Frank, that’s rough. Good job!
